UniFiji Official Awarded Certificate in Executive Coaching

The University of Fiji congratulates Nikhat, Assistant Registrar and Head of Samabula Campus, on successfully attaining a Certificate in Executive Coaching from the IAP Career College.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fiji, Professor Shaista Shameem, said that supporting female staff at management level to gain additional skills and qualifications was a University priority.

The Executive Coach programme is a professional development qualification designed to equip participants with ethical, practical and results-driven coaching skills, with a strong focus on leadership, communication and workplace performance. The programme emphasised structured, step-by-step executive coaching techniques applicable to modern organisational environments.

Through the programme, Ms Nikhat gained advanced insights into leadership performance measurement, including communication effectiveness, adaptability to change, interpersonal relationships, decision-making, productivity, and the ability to train and motivate others. The course also placed strong emphasis on self-improvement, constructive feedback and continuous learning in leadership roles.

A significant component of the programme focused on communication skills essential for effective coaching, particularly active listening, clear and purposeful use of language, and non-verbal communication. Participants were trained to recognise how body language, tone and attentiveness influence trust, understanding and conflict resolution in workplace settings.

The programme further addressed work-life balance and wellbeing, examining the impact of stress, burnout, long working hours, role conflict and time management on professional performance. It highlighted the importance of proactive self-management and celebrating progress and success as part of sustained behavioural change and leadership development.

Ms Nikhat said the qualification would directly strengthen her work at the University of Fiji.

“This programme has enhanced my leadership and people-management skills, particularly in mentoring staff, managing performance, and supporting student success through structured coaching approaches. It will also enable me to contribute more effectively to institutional leadership and strategic planning,” she said.

At the University level, the qualification is expected to support stronger communication and collaboration across departments, improve the management of workplace challenges, and contribute to the development of internal coaching and mentoring initiatives aligned with the University’s strategic priorities.

The University of Fiji continues to encourage and support staff participation in professional development programmes that strengthen leadership capacity and enhance service delivery across its campuses
