Programme Description

Pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is often associated with long hours of reading, research and writing. While doctoral study demands commitment, discipline and intellectual curiosity, it is also one of the most rewarding academic journeys. A PhD provides the opportunity to make original contributions to knowledge, publish high-quality research, influence public policy and establish yourself as an expert in your field. It equips graduates with advanced analytical, critical thinking and research skills that are highly valued in academia, government, international organisations and policy research institutions.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in International Relations and Diplomacy at the JDP School of Law is designed for highly motivated scholars who aspire to advance knowledge and address some of the world’s most pressing political, diplomatic and security challenges. The programme requires students to possess a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical dimensions of international relations and diplomacy, enabling them to undertake independent, original and impactful research.
The PhD programme prepares graduates for careers in academia, research, public policy, diplomacy, international organisations, think tanks and other research-intensive institutions. Throughout their candidature, students work closely with experienced academic supervisors to develop rigorous research that contributes to scholarship and informs policy and practice.

Admission to the programme is highly competitive. Applicants are expected to demonstrate, through a well-developed Statement of Research Intent, a clear research proposal, academic preparedness and the commitment required to undertake advanced doctoral research over a period of three to four years, full time or six years part time. Successful candidates will join a vibrant scholarly community dedicated to excellence in research, critical inquiry and intellectual leadership.
