University Profile

The University of Fiji was established by the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji to provide high quality, affordable higher education to students who had no access to other tertiary institutions. The University’s objectives include providing higher education relevant to Fiji’s needs, but within a global framework and to support Fiji’s development as a sustainable, peaceful, inclusive and progressive society committed to good governance.

The University is registered with the Fiji Higher Education Commission. The University of Fiji is governed by a Council, which consists of the main education stakeholders in Fiji, as well as prominent community and business leaders. The University’s initial development was funded by the sponsor, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, a body which has operated in the country for a century and has been prominent in providing quality primary and secondary education.

The University of Fiji has entered into arrangements with a number of universities to ensure international recognition of its qualifications and to encourage joint research and publications, including the University of Canberra, University of Waikato, University of New England and more. The University has various collaborations with corporate sectors such as the Fiji Institute of Accountants, Fiji Law Society, World Health Organisation, Pacific Islands Development Forum to name a few. The University offers programmes through its Schools and Centre at the Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate Degree, Postgraduate levels, Masters and PhD in disciplines such as Accounting, Economics, Management, Computing Science, Information Technology, Mathematics, Law, International Relations, Medicine, Nursing and Language and Literature.

The University Council

The University of Fiji is managed by an independent and all-inclusive council that is dedicated to the highest standard of accountability, transparency, ethics and academic freedom. The council comprises stakeholders in post-primary education in Fiji, as well as persons of commercial, academic and professional eminence.

The University Finances

The University of Fiji’s initial development is funded by the sponsor, the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji, a body that is prominent in providing quality primary and secondary education in Fiji since its inception in 1904.

With limited funding available, the University of Fiji has maintained its commitment to developing its basic facilities and over the last 15 years an estimated $F26m was disbursed to upgrade the Facilities, IT Services, furniture and fittings, books and equipments. The University of Fiji currently boasts two Campuses, six IT centres, and ten clinical accommodation sites for our medical students. The University of Fiji, at present, is developing a third Campus which hopes to facilitate an IT Lab, Science Lab, a Library, Lecture theatre and Tutorial Rooms in Ba.

The University of Fiji has achieved much in amassing an appropriate number of enrolled students because its operating revenues extensively cover the University’s operational costs.

While the University of Fiji and its sponsors aim to bear most of the operational expenses of the University, the University of Fiji continues to seek grant aid and other forms of assistance from local and international donor agencies and individual philanthropy.

Moreover, the University of Fiji is an accredited University that acknowledges the great assistance the Government continues to provide in its development as a Higher Education Institution.

The University of Fiji has also been endowed with Tuition Scholarships and generous loan arrangements by donors, including ten Foundation Scholarships by the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji. The University of Fiji is working towards continuously raising the number of scholarships and the level of loan funding.
