The Vice Chancellor formally welcomed all the guests and gave a brief overview of the University in terms of its establishment and growth in the three years. He reported that the School of Law, which was in its third year now was established in 2008 with a cohort of about forty students two classrooms, a small library, but a very committed and enthusiastic Dean in the person of Justice Devendra Pathik, and the foundation lecturer in Law, Mr Sakiusa Rabuka. He also said that the structure for the LLB programme was put together in 2007 by a Curriculum Advisory Group in consultation with Professor Murray Raff, Dean of Law at the University of Canberra. Judge Ajit Singh from New Zealand has been a great source of strength and support to the Law School since the early days.

The Chief Guest, His Excellency The President of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said that he was extremely impressed with the progress made by the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji in terms of providing education to the children of Fiji.

“To start a law school and a medical school just three years after the establishment of the university is something short of a miracle, and all those involved with these developments deserve our commendation,” he said. The Dean of the School of Law, Pundit Devendra Pathik gave a brief account on the establishment of the law School as well as the purpose of its establishment. “When the University came into being in 2005, as Council member, an idea came to mind that there ought to be a Faculty of Law at the University right on our doorstep for Fiji citizens. I had to travel thousands of miles away to Tasmania to obtain a law degree as there was no provision for tertiary education in Fiji.” he said. He further mentioned that as per the requirement under the Legal Practitioners Decree 2009, the Law Programme was recently approved by the Board of Legal Education under the Acting Chairmanship of Hon. Mr. Justice Goundar. The students of the School of Law also organized a short drama performance to entertain the guests.
