Public Lecture on Supply Chain Management


On Thursday August 19, Professor Sohal conducted a Public Lecture on Supply Chain Management that attracted a large audience. In his lecture, Professor Sohal defined Supply Chain Management as ‘customers & suppliers establishing tight partnerships with the objectives of reduced inventory, shorter lead-times and better service to the consumer’. He also explained that Supply Chain Management is ‘the integration of processes across the supply chain – from raw materials suppliers through to end consumers’. Professor Sohal also talked about the issues and challenges in Supply Chain Management, which include Global financial crisis, Global health issues, Terrorism/War, Climate change, Increasing global trade and a major shift in the strategic focus of firms . He also discussed some techniques in Supply Chain Management which include: Quick Response, Vendor Managed Inventories, Supplier Partnerships, Cross Docking and Advanced Shipment Notification. To further elaborate on the topic of Supply Chain Management, Professor Sohal gave examples from three research projects that his group conducted in the Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Leather industry, Automotive Industry and the Cereal Products Industry. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and learnt a great deal about Supply Chain Management.
