Centres of Excellence

The University has established four centres to complement the work of its Schools. These centres are expected to contribute to professional development, research and publications, policy-oriented project management and consultancies.

 
Centre for International and Regional Affairs (CIRA)
The Centre for International and Regional Affairs(CIRA) was established to enhance Fiji's capacity to deal with the many opportunities and challenges of globalization and to strengthen Fiji's efforts to systematically integrate its economy and society with its immediate region first, including that of Australia and New Zealand and then with other regions. >>More
Centre for Indigenous Studies (CIS)

The Centre for Indigenous Studies(CIS) aims to be the premier institution in Fiji for teaching, reviews, dialogue, and policy-oriented link in all aspects of indigenous Fijian culture, tradition,economy and politics. The Centre for Indigenous Studies was officially launched on 17 August 2007 after it commenced offering courses in Fijian language at the beginning of Semester 2.

The Centre aims to play a major role in the study of Fijian language, culture, society, economy and leadership, as well as encouraging the development of an inclusive and a united Fiji, where its ethnic populations can develop a greater understanding of and respect for one another. In pursuance of this important role, the Centre’s programme of studies comprises courses in Fijian language and culture, major issues of concern to the indigenous Fijian people and contemporary Fijian issues, in an inclusive sense, in a rapidly changing and globalizing world.

These courses, when successfully completed, will lead to the award of a Diploma in Fijian Language and Culture or a major in a Bachelors Degree.

The Centre for Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development (CEESD)
The Centre for Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development aims to provide expert advice, project management and teaching in the areasof energy, environment and sustainable development.

The Centre for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development has been established to complement the work of the University's Schools and contribute to professional development, research and publications, policy-oriented project management and consultancies.

The key objective of the CEESD is to strengthen research capacity and to harness it in the service of policy making, planning and sustainable development in the areas of energy, environment, science and technology. It will provide policy analysis and market research services in these areas, with emphasis on liaison and networking with the private sector in Fiji and other Pacific Island countries.

The Centre will work in conjunction with the School of Science and Technology to offer courses and programmes that are relevant to the sustainable development of Fiji and the Pacific Region.

The Centre for Gender Research (CGR)
The Centre for Gender Research(CGR) is mandated to carryout programmes for greater understanding of gender issues in Fiji and to promote the empowerment of women to ensure that Fiji's development is gender-equitable.

The aim of the Centre for Gender Research is to conduct research at the national, regional and international levels, and further, to make the benefits of this research available to governments, non-governmental organizations, other interested stakeholders, and the community. In addition, the Centre’s aim is to introduce (at an appropriate stage) the teaching of courses in gender studies. Its purpose is to:

  • Promote gender research to raise consciousness in the area;
  • Offer programmes in gender studies;
  • Enable the community (both local and global) to benefit from the research undertaken;
  • Promote legislation that increases gender equality and to monitor Fiji’s adherence to conventions relating to women signed by Fiji
